Bushcraft Weekend with the Benson Family

Hey everyone, I wanted to share a little adventure I had over the weekend with the Benson family. From Thursday to Sunday, we immersed ourselves in bushcraft and wild camping, and it was quite the experience!

Thursday: Setting Up Camp

We kicked off our adventure by setting up camp near the roundhouse. The excitement was palpable as we pitched our tents and gathered around to cook our first meal. Matt, the dad, at 49, was as enthusiastic as his two sons, Hugo (15) and Oshin (13). The boys were buzzing with energy, eager to learn and explore.

Knife Skills and Safety

Our first lesson was on knife skills and safety rules—crucial knowledge for any bushcraft adventure. Despite the repeated reminders (teenage boys, right?), I hope Hugo and Oshin left with a better understanding and respect for knives. It was hard work, but essential for their safety.

Shelter Building and Fire Making

Next, we dived into shelter building and fire making. This was a hit with the boys! They enjoyed the hands-on experience of creating something from scratch. However, gathering and filtering water wasn’t as appreciated, especially when they had to use it for washing dishes. But hey, survival skills aren’t always glamorous!

Friday: Walk-About and Learning

We spent Friday walking through the woods, the boys armed with their homemade spears, knives, and water bottles. As we trekked, we talked about different trees, landscapes, animal tracks, and even animal droppings. It was educational and fun, blending learning with the great outdoors.

Swimming and Relaxation

After hours of walking, we found ourselves at the swimming lakes. We spent a few delightful hours swimming and having lunch, enjoying the refreshing water and the serene environment. It was the perfect way to relax before setting up camp again for the night.

Evening Fun: Games and Laughter

As the sun set, we gathered around for a night of playing cards and games. "Exploding Kittens" was a big hit! The boys’ laughter filled the air, and I have to admit, it was the point I sneaked off to bed, leaving them to their fun.

Saturday: More Skills and Bonding

Saturday was a mix of repeating some essential skills—because teenage boys need reminders—and learning new ones. We reinforced knife safety, practiced more fire making, and even dabbled in a bit of wild cooking. The boys loved the food, especially the hot dogs and chicken!

Sunday: Wrapping Up

By Sunday, we were all a bit tired but immensely satisfied. The boys had learned a lot, bonded with their dad, and experienced the beauty and challenge of living in the wild. While they practiced their skills one last time, I had a little time to work on an outdoor table for our cooking area. It was a small project, but it added a nice touch to our campsite and made cooking a bit easier.

We left the weekend with a sense of accomplishment and a few new skills. Seeing Hugo and Oshin’s faces light up with each new skill they mastered made all the hard work worth it.

Here's to more adventures and the hope that the boys remember at least some of those knife safety tips!

Thanks for reading about our bushcraft weekend. It was an unforgettable experience that I’m sure the Benson family will cherish for a long time.

Am now looking forward to next weekend, as we have more adventures waiting to happen. 12 scouts doing a course, and a small private group.

Looking forward to our experience on the 10-11 August
